Thanks to the early 80s recession and the national strike of 1982, BR lost a considerable amount of freight traffic so by 1983, the class 40s had become surplus to requirements. 40180 is seen heading a group of about ten at Crewe Works, waiting for the call into the 'Melts' shed behind where they would be reduced to scrap. I remember what it was like in there; a huge cavernous place, almost cathedral-like but very dark with one loco partly cut over in one corner next to various bits of metal ready for melting down. 26/6/83
