Effectively a development of the Warship, capable of working heavy freight as well as passenger trains, the Westerns performed poorly on introduction but by the 1970s were clocking up high mileages. With falling traffic across the system, there should have been no need for BR to order the class 50 locomotives, however advanced the design might have been (modified 47s could have done their job on the West Coast) but such is history.
One of my earliest shots of a Western in preservation: D1013 at Arley with one of the famous 'Obbo' specials that used to be run for the enjoyment of WLA members. 25/7/87
